Safety & Security
Q: Is Charleston a welcoming destination for the LGBTQI+ community?
A: Charleston is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, with a strong history of Southern hospitality, a growing LGBTQ+ community, and LGBTQ+-friendly establishments and resources. The city has been recognized as a significant LGBTQ+ travel destination and has implemented programs like the Charleston Police Department's Safe Place program to support the community.
Q: Is Charleston a safe city to visit?
A: Yes, Charleston is generally a safe city for tourists, especially in popular areas like the Historic District (where our hotel is located), but visitors should exercise caution, particularly at night, by staying in well-lit, populated areas and being aware of their surroundings.
As when visiting any major city, there are some common-sense tips you should always follow:
Travel in groups and avoid walking alone on unlit streets at night.
Pay attention when walking and using your smartphone as these devices have been the target of
thieves nationwide.
Do not leave your purse, backpack, or briefcase unattended, especially on the back of your chair.
Be on the lookout for pickpockets. Consolidate your wallet. Don't bring every single credit card with you.
Move cards/cash to your front pocket or/and wear a cross-body bag rather than a shoulder strap to keep your purse in front of you. Do not display large amounts of cash in public places.
Remove your conference badge and put it in your pocket or purse when leaving the hotel for sightseeing.
When using a mobile rideshare app, confirm the identity of your driver before getting into the car.
If you are intoxicated, please take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft instead of walking or driving.
Trust your gut instincts. If someone or something seems suspicious, leave the area and alert a police officer.
If approached by strangers who try to start up a “con game” conversation with remarks such as, “I bet I can tell you where you got your shoes,” do not participate. Simply smile and walk past them.
Ensure that your hotel room door is fully closed and locked at all times.
Do not leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers.
Remember that most laws enforced in your city are enforced in Charleston as well.
